Chicago – Top of the Sears Tower
Well I had a busy old day with my guests on their last day in the U.S. We stopped off at Lou Mitchell’s for Breakfast and I almost exploded and I always forget that the portions are quite all encompassing. I didn’t even touch my toast and thank god we shared a plate of 3 pancakes between us. Lou Mitchell’s is somewhere everyone has to go now and again and especially with guests. It’s quite loud and the server was having some problems understanding and hearing us but we managed to get our point across i.e. gimme a full American breakfast please.
After our long stop shovelling down fat, carbs and protein we headed over to the Sears Tower. Now I have done this several times before and I was a bit annoyed they had closed the 103rd floor sky-deck and we had to go to the 99th instead. The view was still incredible but if you ask me they really should wash the windows daily if they are going to charge people $15 to go up there. Luckily they weren’t too bad today but they should be completely spotless as this is the only reason to go up. Either way the $15 is worth it I have to say providing you get there early and do not have to line up for hours.
You think the Hancock Tower Signature room is high the sears tower observation decks are so high it’s a different league to all the others. I wonder why they don’t put a swanky restaurant up here, perhaps there is not enough money in it or it’s too much hassle considering what they can charge just to pop up for 30 minutes. Anyway they are apparently installing a glass floor that sticks out about 3-4 feet opening this month. This is going to be very exciting so I may pop back. It will save me having to go all the way to Nevada or Arizona onto that glass bridge hanging over the Grand Canyon as this, I think, will be truly terrifying.
I remember going to the CN Tower in Toronto and the last time I was there they have a piece of glass floor which is a bit faded that people can walk over. I couldn’t do it, I had to walk on the metal beam supporting the glass floor panel. At the Sears Tower this will be a whole different ball game with a large completely enclosed glass floor and walls which will freak you out I would imagine. I’ll be first in the queue! Anyway that is probably why they had the 103rd floor closed for work on this viewing platform. It had better be worth it.
